For this site, where users can upload and crop their own images, we had to build a complex image-handling system that was easy to use and worked across the popular browsers.

There were products on the market that did much of what our system needed to do, but by building our own back-end from scratch gave us full control and a website that could be expanded upon far more easily than a closed system (like an off-the-shelf solution).
